North Carolina Envirothon Forestry Practice Test

Forest fragmentation significantly impacts animal migration by isolating populations. When forests are fragmented due to human activities such as logging or urban development, large forested areas are divided into smaller patches. This isolation makes it more difficult for animals to move between these patches, which can lead to genetic bottlenecks, decrease in biodiversity, and ultimately threaten the survival of certain species.

Animals often rely on interconnected habitats to find food, mates, and seasonal resources. Fragmentation can create barriers that prevent animals from accessing these necessary areas, disrupting their migration patterns and leading to declines in population numbers. The limitation of movement can also result in higher mortality rates due to the inability to relocate to areas with more abundant resources or suitable habitats. Thus, the correct answer emphasizes how fragmentation can hinder migration by preventing the movement of animal populations between habitat patches.
